The Democrats have taken a hard turn to the left. Everyone knows it and everyone is talking about it.
Bernie Sanders took the party into the socialist ditch when he ran for president four years ago — today every single candidate in the field to the be the Democratic standard bearer is making the Vermont socialist look too conservative.
There is a lot at risk however. In recent weeks two major events have occurred that have many lifelong Democrats re-thinking who they are and whether or not they can support the party any further. For Jewish Americans that have been staunch Democrats all their lives, comments from a pair of freshmen members of Congress have them rattled.
“I am scared of the future and fear I can no longer support Democrats,” said a good friend of mine just last night. She is Jewish and she says the comments by her member of Congress, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, has her questioning whether she will ever support a Democrat ever again. My friend is liberal and detests President Trump but cannot look past what he has done and what liberal lawmakers have not. Trump finally delivered on moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem making good on the broken promises of several previous administrations. Meanwhile, Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, another freshman lawmaker from Minnesota, have both made a series of comments considered openly anti-Semitic. Both women are Muslim and both support Palestine over Israel. And despite the caustic comments and the blowback from the Jewish community Democratic Party leaders like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have been silent.
Meanwhile another scandal is devouring the Democratic Governor of Virginia. Ralph Northam, who was elected in 2016, is being called on to resign by just about everyone on both sides of the aisle after pictures of him in medical school surfaced showing a man in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan outfit. Northam tried to explain after first admitting he was in the college yearbook picture that it wasn’t really him and he knows because he actually remembers the time he donned blackface — that was the time he dressed up as Michael Jackson and did the moonwalk. By the way it was ok, he let us know, because he won the dance contest.
The real problem however isn’t 35-year-old yearbook pictures or dancing like Michael Jackson but rather the way Northam has tried to dance away from his comments about killing children after they are born. It was during a radio interview last week that Northam attempted to defend the indefensible idea of legalizing abortion up to the moment a child is delivered. Northam said, “If a mother is in labor I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that what the mother and the family desired and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.” The implication is sickening, the termination of an infant’s life at the discretion of those in the room.
I asked another close friend and Democrat if he’s ok with that he laughed and said there is no place that an abortion up to the moment of birth is acceptable. My friend is also Catholic and I asked how people of faith can support late term abortions. He said there is no way to support such a terrible thing.
This is not an academic question of course. The New York Governor signed a late-term abortion bill into law just a couple of weeks ago. Governor Andrew Cuomo celebrated the new law in The Empire State that allows a child to be aborted up to the moment of birth. So excited were Democrats that they lit up the Freedom Tower in pink to declare killing babies is a way to champion women’s rights.
I am sorry, but they are wrong.
In fact, Democrats are so wrong that their 2020 political agenda looks like a caricature of what Republicans would make up about liberals but sadly it’s not a cartoon — it’s real. Democrats are supporting Palestine over Israel, calling for income tax rates of up to 90 percent, endorsing sanctuary cities, promoting late term and partial birth abortions, demanding a crackdown on gun rights, proclaiming it’s time to eliminate all private insurance so the government can take over healthcare for 200 million Americans and the list goes on. This is a recipe for the end of the Democratic Party.
Howard Schultz may be on to something ditching Democrats to make a run as independent.
Like many of my friends on the left have said to me recently, they are not sure what to think any more when it comes to the Democrats. So many have been lifelong members of the party but have become so disillusioned they don’t think they can support Democrats any longer.
This is how Donald Trump wins a second term. Mark my words.
