Phillip Swagel, a former Treasury Department official, has been named the new director of the Congressional Budget Office, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

The CBO is the office established to provide budgetary and economic expertise to Congress.

His appointment was announced by the chairmen of the House and Senate budget committees on Wednesday.

Swagel served as assistant secretary for economic policy at the Treasury Department from 2006 until 2009, the Examiner noted. He is now a professor of international economic policy at the University of Maryland. Swagel also is a nonresident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

He will replace Keith Hall at the CBO on June 3. Hall, whose four-year term ended Jan. 3, had agreed to stay on until his successor was chosen, according to Roll Call.
