In his State of the Union address this past Tuesday, President Trump proclaimed:
“Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country. America was founded on liberty and independence — not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”
Trump was responding directly to the leftist “Green New Deal,” pushed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), the Bronx’s newly elected congresswoman, and endorsed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Senator Ed Markey (D-MA).
Specifically, the Green New Deal (GND) is yet another manifesto to remake America via government coercion, domination, and control (recall candidate Barack Obama’s quest to fundamentally transform America):
“The Green New Deal resolution is a 10-year plan to mobilize every aspect of American society at a scale not seen since World War 2, to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and create economic prosperity for all.”
In essence, the GND’s aim is to: eliminate and prohibit all production and usage of oil and gas within 10 years; outlaw cow farts; guarantee unionized jobs, affordable housing, and free healthcare for all; and ensure economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work.
Anyone with a brain knows that the GND is total nonsense, that it would bankrupt this country. Obviously, its proponents and fans have no brains.
Despite never succeeding anywhere — ask the oppressed, starving people in Cuba and Venezuela — and despite serving as the basis for killing more than 100-million people in the 20th Century, socialism won’t die.
Three reasons: There is no shortage of insecure bullies who want to control others, passive sheep who want to be controlled, and those who feel guilty about succeeding:
- Dictators and powerful politicians, who always live well, love to tyrannize and impoverish their subjects.
- Most people are followers. Eric Hoffer, author of “The True Believer,” explained that, to avoid critical thinking and taking responsibility for their actions, followers willingly accept, join, and promote movements in which all activities, attitudes, and utterances are prescribed and reinforced.
- An endless list of successful journalists, athletes, actors, and business moguls trumpet the false promises of socialism: to assuage the guilt they feel for doing well (often learned from their parents and teachers), and to mollify the angry, wealth-hating mobs.
Why is it that New Deals and Green New Deals don’t emanate from true capitalists? They are control-loathing, freedom-loving individualists, motivated by competition, proud of their accomplishments — too busy solving problems, building companies, hiring employees, and creating wealth to oppress others.
True capitalists create rising tides. They know that, to quote President John F. Kennedy, a rising tide lifts all boats.
Since Donald Trump became president, he’s helped to lower taxes and gut regulations. In other words, he’s reduced government control and returned freedom to American citizens, so that they can succeed. His rising tide has bolstered business confidence, increased investment from abroad, and drastically lowered unemployment for women, blacks, and Hispanics.
Doesn’t everyone want that?
No. When citizens become prosperous and independent from government, socialists lose power, and they seethe.
That’s why people with no particular talent, who cannot make it in the private sector — the AOCs of the world — gravitate to government. Why not? It’s a good deal. How else can one go from poor bartender to a $174,000 salary, in one fell swoop?
AOC’s goal, therefore, is to maintain her big paycheck. To do that, she must amass power and control over Americans. Hence, her Green New Deal.
And, because nearly half of AOC’s fellow Millennials identify as socialists, and because adoring TV reporters keep her flame burning 24/7, she has the fuel and the constituency (for now) to achieve her goal.
Donald Trump can resolve from a lectern that America will never be a socialist country, but words are not enough. Action is mandatory. He must find a way to require public-school students to learn the merits of capitalism and the perils of the failed, pernicious ideology called socialism. Alas, they are learning the opposite.
So, if you’re a budding Marxist, worry not. As long as there are people who like to control and to be controlled, an education system that rails against success, and pathetic saps afflicted with wealth-guilt, socialism will not die.
