So-called Progressive Democrats better take a hard look at where their party is heading in election year 2020. For the moment we will assume that the word Progressive denotes a more moderate tone than the headline-grabbing far-left of socialists like freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
The supposedly moderate base of the Democratic Party is under full-scale assault by a relatively small group of young Democratic lawmakers, most of whom are in their very early stages on the national scene in Washington. Their ideology, whatever that is, may bring the destruction of an entire political party and its traditional base of support.
Far-left politicians such as Ocasio-Cortez think their mission is to destroy American conservatism. That would include the legacy of such legendary conservatives like former President Ronald Reagan.
In their bid to regain the White House in 2020, they are forgetting that 67 million Americans voted for Donald Trump. It can be safely said that most of those voters will not be swayed by the lure of ‘free stuff’ that socialists like Ocasio-Cortez use to entice starry-eyed, mostly young, potential voters.
There is no question the Democratic congresswoman is a rising star in her party, but at what cost?
The mainstream media trip over themselves to report her every move while the more moderate base of the party remain strangely silent. The far-left view the senior members of their party, like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, as relics of the past.
They should not be so quick to dispose of the Democratic leadership which would garner many more votes from the American electorate than they do now or will ever be capable of with their socialist doctrine. The mostly young upstarts even consider ‘one of their own,’ 77-year-old Bernie Sanders, to be past his prime even though he would be the leading vote-getter for the party’s presidential nomination at this time.
Throwing out the baby with the bathwater is not the solution in 2020.
Class warfare may be the ‘hip’ thing to advocate when you are young and vacant of life experience, but it’s an insult to many Americans who can and will vote next year.
Targeting conservatism as an ideology is suicide for the far-left. Not only are they going far out on a very tenuous limb in terms of alienating millions of American voters, they are falling into the same trap that claimed the last Democratic presidential nominee; that being the underestimating of voting power from Middle America.
There is a very big reason the Democratic National Committee selected Milwaukie, Wisconsin, as the site of their 2020 national convention. They need to repair their relationship with working-class voters. That means voters who are not prone to socialism as a remedy for this country’s problems.
Ocasio-Cortez and her minions are a fad at present. The media may drool over their every word, but if the moderate elders of the party do not put their collective foot down on these socialist youngsters soon, the next election will be a repeat of Nixon v McGovern in 1972 — a landslide.
